How do you know God is real?
About Us
Visual aid suggestions: A painting, can of soda, bananas, a fan to make invisible wind. .
This is a great question. I had this question, too, when I was a boy. My mom and dad told me He was real and I would pray to Him from time to time. But I couldn't see Him, touch Him, smell Him, or taste Him. So, for a little while, I didn't know whether God was real or not. But today I know for sure, God is real. Let's see if you can know too.
The first way to know that God is real is to look at His creation. Try to think of it like this. When you see a painting, you know there was a painter. You don't have to see him, touch him, smell him, or taste him. The painting itself proves there was a painter. Now think about a can of soda. It's made of aluminum and has an easy to open pop top, with a sweet and sticky drink inside. Could this have come about by accident or did it have a maker? Anyone could tell you, it had to have a maker. All you need is eyes that can see and a brain that works to know that. Now let's think of a banana. A banana is much more amazing then a painting or a can of soda. It is made to fit nicely in our hand. It has a no slip grip. It is color coded to tell you when it is ready to eat. (Green = not yet, Yellow = just right, Brown = too late.) Like the soda can, it has a top you can pop open. As an added bonus the banana tastes good and is good for you. Plus, unlike the aluminum can, you can throw the package into the dirt where it will recycle itself. Now let me ask you. Did the banana happen by accident or was it designed just like a painting or a can of soda? The answer is easy. The banana had a Creator. All you need is eyes that can see and a brain that works to figure that out. This is exactly what the Bible says. In Romans 1:20 it says, "For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities--His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." (NLT) God says everyone should know He is real as soon as they see His beautiful creation. Of course there are some people who think they are smarter then most of the people in this world. They say that they are so smart that they figured out how the whole universe and all of the amazing creatures within it came about without a Creator. God talks about them in the Bible too. He says, " Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools." Romans 1:22 (NIV). You see, they think they are so smart, but really they are fools. "Only fools say in their hearts, There is no God." Psalm 53:1 (NLT).
A second way to know that God is real is to study the Bible. We will learn more about this later when I answer the Question: "How do you know that God wrote the Bible?" But when you begin to see that the Bible is a miracle and when you begin to experience God speaking to you through the Bible, you will soon discover God is real by reading His Word.
A third way to know that God is real is to see His invisible hands at work in the world. Think about the wind. You can sit inside your house looking out the window and watch the trees blow back and forth. You can't see the wind. But you know it is real. You can see it working. With God, it is the same way. You can actually see that He is working. Reading the Bible and then watching God work for the nation of Israel is one good example. If you read Ezekiel 36:22-24, you will see God promising to work a miracle for Israel. He promised to bring the Jewish people back to the land of Israel. He did this miracle after they had been scattered all over the world for over 1,900 years. And He has been working miracles for Israel ever since. If you read on you will see God has a great plan to one day save the souls of the people in Israel. Why does He do this? In verse 23 you can see why. He says that when He works His miracles, then the rest of the world "Will know that I am the LORD." (NLT) So God, Himself, is telling us that we can know that He is real and that He is the God of the Bible when we see Him working in the world the way He promised to. But that is not the best way to know that God is real
The best way to know that God is real is to experience Him working in your own life. That's how I know God is real. I love looking at His creation and I love seeing Him work in the world like He promises to in the Bible. But nothing compares to seeing Him work in my own life and in the lives of the people I love. I know for sure God is real because I have experienced Him myself. The first thing God did for me was change my heart and mind after I accepted Jesus. That was just the first of many miracles. After that, I saw God save friends and relatives I had thought were hopeless. I have seen God guide me, teach me, scold me, and encourage me. I've seen him protect my children, heal my friends, and I have even seen God answer my prayers miraculously only moments after I had finished praying them. I know God is real because I know Him personally.
One Final Thought... God doesn't just care about the big nation of Israel. He doesn't just care about Sunday School teachers like myself. He actually cares about you too. He wants you to know He is real because you have experienced Him working in your own life. The Bible says the God was "revealed in a human body" (1 Timothy 3:16 NLT). This verse is talking about Jesus and it is one of many verses in the Bible which tells us that we can know God by knowing Jesus. Jesus, Himself, said that He has the power to reveal God to anyone He wants (Matthew 11:27, Luke 10:22). If you really want to know that God is real, get as close to Jesus as you possibly can. Pray, ask Him to forgive you of your sins, invite Jesus into your life, read God's word, and obey it. In time, you will know for yourself that God is real because you will see Him working in your life too.
