Why would God send His Son for
sinful people?

I love this question.
This question is a special question to me. And that is because I look at it and it says something to me about the person who asked it. It says that this person, Frankie, has looked at the fact that God sent His Son into the world to save evil and sinful people and she recognized that this is truly extraordinary. It's confusing because Jesus is so perfect and holy. We are imperfect and very far from holy. So Frankie realized that this thing that God has done is special. It's Gods desire that we all recognize this just like Frankie did. Listen to what Paul said. Romans 5:6 "For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die." What Paul is doing here is making the same observation that Frankie made, but in a different way. First he says, "You know Jesus died for the ungodly even though it's pretty rare that a person is willing to die for a righteous or holy person." Then Paul goes on to say, "It's even more rare that someone is willing to die for your average every day good guy. So how is it that Jesus died for the ungodly and evil? Nobody does that. It doesn't make sense. So Frankie asks, why? Most of the time when someone asks the question why?, I don't have an answer. A lot of times I have to give a verse like this one. Isaiah 55:8-9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
This is one of those times when I need to point to this verse and say, "God's thoughts and ways are higher than our thoughts and ways." But this time I can also tell you why God did it. Why God sent His only begotten Son into the world to die for sinful and evil people.
The answer is love. It was because the All Powerful, All Knowing, Perfect and Holy Creator of the universe has an overwhelming and immeasurable love for you. And there was no other way for God to spend eternity with you and me than for His Son, Jesus, to pay the penalty of our sins for us. God was faced with the choice of spending eternity without you, or dying for you. God's love for you was so strong that he chose to die in your place. God loves you and that's the answer, plain and simple. Look at the rest of the verse we started with earlier.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
When I was a kid, my girlfriend (future wife) and I used to always tell each other I love you this much. (We'd spread our arms wide). But those were just words. Now after OVER 20 years of being together and us demonstrating our love for each other with our actions, it means so much more. God demonstrated his love for us with His actions. In dying on the Cross, He said, "I love you this much" and He spread out his arms and He died for us.
Every now and then I go through a hard time. I even get sad and confused about God and His plan for my life sometimes. But you know what I never say. I never say, "God do you love me? Why don't you love me? if you loved me you wouldn't let that happen to me." No. I never question whether or not God loves me. I look at the cross and I know God loves me.
John 3:16 "For God loved the world so much, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, But shall have everlasting life."
One final thought... I know the story of a little girl who was ashamed for a long time of her mother's appearance. You see...her mother had a disfigured face. For a long time this embarrassed the little girl. When she was in preschool and kindergarten all the other kids could see her disfigured mother when she dropped her off at school and when she picked her up at the end of the day. But when she got just a little bit older her grandma shared with her the story of how her mother's face got that way. When this little girl was just a baby, there was a fire in her home. And the mother of this baby girl ran through the fire to save her sleeping daughter. As a result her face was burned so badly that her scars would never heal. But her mother never regretted saving her daughter. And after learning the truth the little girl was never ashamed of her mother's face again. Now she knew those scars were proof of how much her mother loved her.
The Bible says that in heaven, and in all His glory, Jesus still bears the scars that came in saving you. And they will be there forever. A reminder of how much God loves you.
By the way don't ignore this. If there is anyone reading this who is like that little girl. If you haven't until now truly appreciated what God did for you, and what Jesus did for you, you have a chance to change that. You can tell Him, "Thank you" right now. You can say, "I love you too" right now.
You might want to pray a prayer from your own heart to God. It might sound something like this:
God, I love you!
God, I thank you so much for loving me as much as you do.
Thank you for sending Jesus to die for my sins. Please forgive me.
You are exactly the kind of God I want to spend eternity with.
And you are exactly the kind of God I want to get to know better.
Please begin a loving relationship with me now. One that will last for all eternity.
I know you love me, and I love you too.
Amen.
