Who made God?
About Us
Visual aid suggestions: Family tree, seeds and flowers, toy airplane, and real things that blow our minds.
This is a really good question. In fact, this is another question I wanted to know the answer to when I was younger. Lucky for us, the answer is in the Bible. The answer is....Nobody made God. God always existed. Look at Psalm 90:2. "Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God." (NLT) Did you see that? It says God is "from beginning to end." Thats right, God never had a beginning and He will never end. At first you might think that is impossible. But the truth is this is the only thing that makes sense. Think about it. God had to always exist. If He did not, then a bigger and smarter god made our God, and we would have to ask who made him. And then who made him and it would go on forever. That would be impossible. Something had to be first. And that was God. Look at trees. Every tree comes from a seed which came from a tree which came from a seed which came from tree.... You can't go on forever. You have to come to the first tree at some point. (God tells us about the first trees in the book of Genesis.) The same is true about people. We all had a mom and dad, who had a mom and dad, who had a mom and dad. But this can't go on forever either. You have to come to the first people at some point. (And God tells us about them in Genesis too.) Something or someone always has to come first. The answer is God was first.
Does this blow your mind? If it does, let's look at another verse that might help a little. John 4:24 says, "God is Spirit." (NLT) You and I live in a physical world where everything that happens has a cause. But God is not physical. He is Spirit. And part of the problem for us is that we don't really know how the Spirit world really works. But one thing we do know about God is that as a Spirit, He lives outside of time. The Bible says He lived even, "Before time began." (Titus 1:2& 2 Timothy1:9) To prove that this is true God often tells us about the future. This is impossible for us, but God can do it. How? Hey, I don't know but I can read the Bible and see Him do it over and over again. The only thing I can figure, is that He always existed, just like the Bible says. And that He really does live outside of time, just like the Bible says.
If you're still confused and God still blows your mind then I say, Great! I love the fact that God blows my mind. In fact I don't want a god that can fit inside my little head. If God was so small that I could understand everything about Him, then He wouldn't be big enough for me to worship. I want a God a million times bigger and smarter then me. I want a God that I can see in heaven for over a million years and still be saying, Wow! You are so awesome! I want a God that can blow my mind forever! And that is the God of the Bible.
One final thought... There are a lot of things in this world I don't understand. Airplanes are a good example. How is it that giant airplanes weighing hundreds of thousands of pounds can fly? I freely admit I dont understand it. But the fact is they do fly. And every year millions of people make incredible journeys inside these amazing machines. How sad would it be, however, if people were to say, "I don't understand how airplanes fly, so I'm not going to fly on one." Can you imagine what they would miss? As sad as this would be, it would be much worse to say the same thing about God. God is real and He wants to take you on an amazing journey beyond your wildest dreams. Don't be so foolish as to say, I don't understand so I'm not going. Instead, climb on board and prepare for the ride of your life.
